PCS to Korea – Make Money and See the World
I volunteered for a permanent change of station (PCS) to Korea. I did this for two reasons: saving money and travelling. For some people this may be unrealistic or undesirable due to family, career goals, or other obligations. I decided to make the most out of this opportunity.
Saving Money – I did this by giving “minimalism” a shot and cutting back on everyday wants and desires.
Car: I sold mine in the States, and put my insurance on hold. I walk to work and take the bus/subway everywhere else. Excluding travel expenses, I spend $30-50 a month on getting around Korea. I’ve heard of people trading their second car in for riding a bike as an option to getting to work.
Cellphone: my cellphone is paid off and I switched to an unlimited Korean plan for $55 a month. Consider downgrading your phone plan or switching to an older and cheaper version. See our article here on how you can save on cell phones back in the States too!
Internet/cable: I don’t have cable and I pay $15 a month for internet. I don’t watch a lot of TV so AFN and Amazon Video were enough for me!
Groceries: I shop at local Korean markets, and still head to the commissary for tax free food, commissary rewards, and redemption apps. Read more here about getting started with grocery shopping savings. For household items, I use my Amazon Prime account along with the Amazon credit card for 5% back and free shipping.
House: I live in government housing that was already furnished. My rent/mortgage along with utilities is zero. This allows me to put that money I would normally be spending into savings or investment accounts.
Traveling Since My PCS
Seoul, South Korea
Seoraksan National Forest, South Korea
Gayasan National Forest, South Korea
Yongpyong and Pheonix Ski Resorts, Pyeongchang, South Korea
A PCS to Korea isn’t for everyone but paying less than $100 in bills every month is pretty exciting. I’ve never had more money to invest and spend on things I really care about.
